Born in Lisbon in 1979, Pedro Faria Gomes has been based in the United Kingdom since 2007. He is a lecturer in composition at Cardiff University, and has previously lectured at universities and conservatoires in Portugal and Hong Kong. His music has been commissioned by many organisations and performers such as the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos (ELA), Teatro Nacional São João (Crónica de Dor e Morte), Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa (O Violino Cigano), Orquestra Clássica da Madeira (Romanza e Rondo), Guimarães European Capital of Culture (Contraluz), Companhia Nacional de Bailado (Pinguins), RTP Antena 2 (Elegia), Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa (Tableaux), Academia de Música de Viana do Castelo (Como se Faz Cor-de-Laranja), Academia de Música de Santa Cecília (Cinco Canções Breves, Uma Cantata Portuguesa and Canções do Quadrante), Coro de Câmara de Setúbal (À Memória de Anarda), Wesley Ferreira (Memória), Dryads Duo (Sonata), Stratford Music Festival (Dual) and the London Symphony Orchestra (Evening). It has also been performed by the Portuguese orchestras Gulbenkian, Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Sinfónica Portuguesa, do Norte, do Algarve and Sinfonietta de Lisboa, as well as the ensembles Contemporary Consort, Lontano, Camerata Pacifica, Eidos Trio, Endymion, Coro de Câmara Lisboa Cantat and soloists such as Richard Stoltzman, Sarah Thurlow, Anne Kaasa, Miguel Fernandes, Bruno Borralhinho, Nancy Johnson, Simon Rowland-Jones and Tim Horton. Recordings of his music are available on Naxos, Centaur Records, Casa da Música, Numérica, GDA and Compasso.
Pedro Faria Gomes studied at the Academia de Música de Santa Cecília, the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa and the Royal College of Music in London, where he completed master’s and doctoral degrees in composition. He studied piano with Leonor Fernandes and composition with João Madureira, Eurico Carrapatoso, David Sawer, Kenneth Hesketh and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Recognition for his work has included the PRS Sir Arthur Bliss Memorial Award in the UK and the Lopes-Graça Prize in Portugal. He has also received grants from the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, the Royal Musical Association and the Royal College of Music. He is married to British violist and teacher Sophie Faria, and they live in Cardiff with their daughter Joana.
